This is more focused on when you have a significant skill gap rather than an information reference need, but of course once learners have been through it they’ll possibly have a desire for a reference tool. I used to lump those under examples, more for convenience than any principled reason. Lots of the elements can be re-used: examples can serve as references, diagrams from the concepts can be useful job aids, and of course you can design specific job aids (ala Allison Rossett). They should incorporated in examples and in practice if they exist, BTW, but also should subsequently be accessible by a quick access mechanism (but then, the whole course should be).

However I would ask where support fits in the model? Support being the Knowledge Base of facts, the handbook, the resources. In my experience learners will ask for the reference or guidebook if they do not get it in self-directed elearning.
