Thanks for the review of the book. I think you did a good job reading our “enthusiasm” about the subject. It is a fascinating use of technology and has a great deal of potential…if used correctly.

We tried to strive to be solid from an “academic standpoint” while having enough practical advise so a reader could pick it up and run with it.

Your criticism of the strawman is well noted (and accurate in hindsite…didn’t see it when in the writing process), I guess we got the pedagogy intermixed with some of the affordances in that instance. I can see your point.

I think our frame of reference was that, unfortunately, many virtual classroom experiences are devoid of the pedagogy that would make the experiences at least tolerable. But, as you have pointed out in your blog entries many times, pedagogy does not necessarily follow technology.

I would also encourage book tour readers to pick up a copy of “Engaging Learning” and to take a look at all the work you’ve done in this area. It will help those serious about the subject to obtain a holistic view of the topics and gain a sightly different perspective on 3D affordances, pedagogy and engaging learning. The more well read and informed we all are, the better the outcomes.

Thanks again for being a great stop on the tour!

Thanks so much for taking the time to do a thorough review of the book. As we have discussed when we meet you are bang on about the Sensibilities/Affordances being also applicable to e-learning. The thought I had in putting them together with Chuck is that the Immersive qualities of the Avatar-Mediated 3D context bring some of these into more stark relief (Self, Place, Distance). When it comes to things like Co-Creation its clear that Wikis are very solid 2D affordances that allow this to happen sans Avatar.

That being said, I REALLY like your take on affordances, particularly how you map them to Inherent, Potential and Emergent. I also really like your mapping of Web 1.0 (Producer Generated), Web 2.0 (Consumer Generated) and Web 3.0 (Semantic). I went from Web 2.0 to the 3D web or “immernet” in my thinking, but I think that your framing of the technology and maturity of the web is very useful.

Just more proof that we should hang out and talk more ; )

Again, thanks for being part of the blog tour.
