If SMEs can admit they don’t know a lot about instructional design and we admit we don’t know a lot about the subject matter, we can work together to do some amazing stuff. Especially in higher education, faculty have a very hard time getting outside their self-imposed boxes.

I’ve often thought that ID could learn a lot about how to elicit the understanding of a task that SME’s carry around with them if the ID took a little time to get acquainted with the knowledge acquisition failures in the expert systems development efforts of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
