Rob, I guess I mean ‘a priori’, as I write in another post (2nd Loop), I think we should expect to be more tightly coupled, and helping at the point of need, not pre-thought. We should also be anticipating other types of needs: info, people. But there will be more ambiguity and unique situations is the premise, and we need richer responses than training can provide. I think we’re in agreement.

Ara, I see us needing to educate managers/execs about this shift in role, how it’s more strategic, more current, and then helping them become more effective at assisting their folks; helping them become leaders, not managers, to tap into the power of their people. See the 2nd loop model I referred to in my reply to Rob.

I agree with you and Jane that the department needs to shift and I think Jane’s three services work at the individual level but I’d like to know how you see L&D working at the organizational level?]]> Clark, to pick up Rob’s point, where do you see the role of L&D interacting with managers and executives in the future? I agree with you and Jane that the department needs to shift and I think Jane’s three services work at the individual level but I’d like to know how you see L&D working at the organizational level?

While I agree that courses have been overused as solutions, as has training in general, it seems like we can do a lot more to anticipate the needs of our learners. Even better, now we have a lot more options to address those needs. Thoughts? Rob]]> Clark,
I’d like to see more of your thoughts on the following statement “Increasingly, we can’t anticipate the unique needs our learners will have”. While I agree that courses have been overused as solutions, as has training in general, it seems like we can do a lot more to anticipate the needs of our learners. Even better, now we have a lot more options to address those needs.

Thoughts?

Rob
