There are many scholarly explanations of what triggers and sustains it. I lean towards the biological. Consistent with Robert Sapolsky’s worldview (if I understand it correctly). Learning, on the other hand, seems mostly cognitive or more broadly psychological. We learn from everything – experience, people, books etc. – and I don’t doubt that it’s impossible not to learn while one’s brain still works. Willingness to learn? That sounds like willingness to breathe. Volition doesn’t really come into it, in my opinion.

Challenge is another matter. Not about drive or learning, feeling or thinking. Challenge is extrinsic. We are challenged by everything that is not ourselves. Sometimes extremely (like being challenged to free solo El Capitan), more often not (like being challenged to write a blog).
