1. Aggressive prioritization (make clear what your core competencies/responsibilities are and are not)
How many IT folks are coders and Project Managers? How many also do graphics and design items? Often, we are asked to wear way too many hats. So, if you need to clear space to get work done, offload PM tasks. Request graphics or coding support, etc… Be clear that first and foremost your job is to design and coordinate the implementation of a solution that improves skills and capabilities in the workforce to impact the business.

2. Leverage resources VERY wisely
I cannot tell you how many times I ask IDs if they go to marketing for resources or to IT for online resources (even if you don’t use “components” they design for the web, you should be requesting these resource libraries so you deploy a design that HAS been well thought out and consistent with UX and brand, etc… I think too often we walk down our own path and don’t look to work and standards that are done and resources that would help us- and align us to the business.

And who knows? You might make some great friends along the way.

3. Minimum effective dose- don’t design a huge interactive online course when a one page jobaid will get it done. If it is compliance, and the job is really getting the check in the box- do the bare minimum to get the check in the box (honestly, most of us signed off on an employee workbook at some stage in our career with NOBODY checking if we even opened it- but they NEED that check and don’t care if it is read… feel free to use this example to clarify what the true goal is).

4. Clarify timelines- I find it interesting they think a multiweek project (by all standards for L&D development times) can be done in less time- AND them asking you to do all the jobs in tandem. If they PM tasks take 25% of the project time, that extends the project production 25%. It’s just math.

And, remind folks-often adding more pilots to the cockpit won’t make the plane go faster- especially if those resources are added very late (because you will spend more time transitioning the task than if you just close it out).

One thing about all this “pushback”- have your numbers and be dispassionate and clinical, not emotional.

It’s just math. If they have a problem with that, you can’t resolve that. It’s not a problem with you.
